This is a list of hike locations my friends and I go to regularly. It’s for our own private use, but it may be interesting for others who like to hike in this area. Some are nice road walks we use during hunting season and mud season. Some are public lands and town trails.


Hike up  snowmobile trail from Pekin Brook Rd

Meet at 9:30 at the junction of Pekin Brook Rd & George Rd in Calais. Watch weather reports to consider need of Yax Trax or snow shoes. Questions? Contact Jennifer – vtpots@gmail.com


Hike on Thompson  Rd into the Stranahan Forest in Marshfield

Follow Rt 14 north from N Montpellier and take a right onto Max Gray Rd. Turn right onto Sadie Foss Rd. Follow Sadie Foss Rd across  Hollister Hill Rd, and it  becomes Beaver Meadow Rd. Bear right  onto Pitkin Farms Rd and watch for  a pull off on the right as the road makes sharp left. This is the north end of  Thompson Rd and we can hike the Stranahan Forest from there.


Hike From Annie’s House into Stranahan Forest

Let’s meet at 9:30 at Anne Reed’s house –

There are so many ways to get to Anne’s! Her address is 3941 Hollister Hill Rd. Google Map: https://goo.gl/maps/V9YDXCD6Kbs

From North Montpelier, take Rt 214,  turn left on Taylor Farm Rd, turn left onto Hollister Hill and go approx. 2 miles. Anne’s place is on the left, a little brown house with green trim, close to the road, across from a white farmhouse. 3941 posted on the house.

OR coming up Max Gray Road from Rt 14, turn right onto Sadie Foss then right on Hollister Hill Rd. Anne’s  house is 0.8 miles from the turn, on the right.

Please do not park on the road –  you can park in the driveway or on the lawn.

 Stranahan Forest in Marshfield

 From Adamant area, take Lightening Ridge, cross Rt 14 onto Max Gray, take a right on Sadie Foss and then another right onto Hollister Hill Rd. Look for the Stranahan Forest Parking lot on your left. If you get to Hollister Hill Farm you’ve gone too far.

For those living further south:
Go through Plainfield on Rt 2 going east and take a left on Hollister Hill Rd. After a mile or so the road bears left at a 4 corners. Then take the 1st right to continue on Hollister Hill Rd. Go past Hollister Hill Farm and look for the Stranahan Forest parking lot on your right.

Hike East end of Thompson Rd in Stranahan Forest

This hike goes into the beautiful Stranahan Forest from the east side. Print this out for your drive since there are  a lot of turns.

Follow Rt 14 north from N Montpellier and take a right onto Max Gray Rd. Turn right onto Sadie Foss Rd. Follow Sadie Foss Rd across  Hollister Hill Rd, and it  becomes Beaver Meadow Rd. Plainfield Railroad Bed Hike

This is a level hike through woods along the  historic Montpelier & Wells River railroad bed. From Route 2 turn down into Plainfield, past Positive Pie and the turn to Onion River Coop. In about 1/2 a mile look for the Park & Ride lot on left. We’ll meet there.

East Montpelier Hike Snow Hill Rd and Kelton Rd

Let’s start at  the junction of Snow Hill Rd and Kelton Rd in East Montpelier, between the 4 Corners School and Seth Gardner’s farm. A nice walk starts as a class 4 road and then we can take  woods trail through a sweet little valley  ending at Chickering Rd. The out and back is about 2 miles and if we take a right on Chickering we have the option of following Guyette back to Snow Hill for a 2.5 mile loop. Woods Walk on Woodbury Mountain Rd

We’re walking a new trail – Woodbury Mountain Rd. Go north through Maple Corners on the County Rd. About 1/2 mile past the Dugar Brook Rd turn on the right, watch for a left hand road with a HOUSE FOR SALE sign. We’ll park there and follow the trail up onto the Woodbury Mountain Ridge. Questions? From Adamant take Adamant Rd going north,  turn right onto Lightening Ridge Rd and go about a mile.  Turn left on  George Rd.  Let’s meet at the parking area on the left side of George Rd,  but be careful not to back  into the ditch by the road.   Questions? Hayden Rd Walk

Trail Hike on E Montpelier Trail  Center Rd to Templeton Rd
Let’s meet at 9:30 at the trailhead on Center Rd just up the hill and south of the Templeton Rd – Center Road intersection. There is a small pull-off on the right. The Google address is half way between 2915 and 3483 Center Road, East Montpelier, VT. Foot gear for ice recommended. Trail Hike – E Montpelier Trail from Center Rd to Dodge Rd

 Hike from Dodge Rd– E Montpelier Trail Saturday 

We’ll hike the E Montpelier Trail starting from Dodge Rd about a mile east of the Center Rd/Dodge Rd intersection near E Montpelier Center. Hike – E Montpelier Trail Templeton Rd  to Center Rd

Apple Hill Rd Hike from Dugar Brook End

Apple Hill is a beauty that runs from Dugar Brook Rd to Elmslie Rd near Maple Corner. Let’s meet at the junction of Apple Hill Rd and Duggar Brook Rd.

From Calais, take Moscow Woods Rd to North Calais Rd and turn left. Duggar Brook Rd is the next right. Watch for Apple Hill Rd on your left.

From Maple Corner take Kent Hill Rd through Kent’s Corners down the hill and take a left onto North Calais Rd. Duggar Brook Rd is your next left. Watch for Apple Hill Rd on your left –  there may not be a  sign.

Hike Apple Hill Rd in Calais from Emslie Rd end

Option 1 – Take Kent Hill Rd from Maple Corners to the Kent Museum intersection and turn left into  Robinson Cemetery Rd. Past the cemetery turn right onto Apple  Hill Rd and park at the intersection of Emslie Rd.

Option 2 – Take North Calais Rd and turn onto Kent Hill Rd. At the Kent Museum intersection take a right onto  Robinson Cemetery Rd. Past the cemetery turn right onto Apple  Hill Rd and park at the intersection of Emslie Rd.

Hike to a Calais Fen
We are lucky to have Missy Storrow as our guide to hike to a Fen listed on the new Calais Natural Resource Inventory. Meet at Missy’s house: 710 Wheeler Rd off County Rd. Going north, Wheeler (note Cozy Corner sign) is a left north of the Fitch Rd turn. If you see the Bliss Rd or Longmeadow Hill turn you’ve gone too far. Ellis Bruce Trail Hike in Calais
Let’s meet at 9:30 at the trail head at the top of Longmeadow Hill Rd, which is a left turn(going north) off County Rd just past the Wheeler Rd turn. If you get to the Bliss Pond Rd turn you’ve gone too far. From Maple Corners the right is just past the Bliss Rd turn. Go to the end of the road (go straight at the intersection of Robinson Hill Rd, not marked) and park at the trail head to the right of the Bradley’s driveway.. Questions? Bradley Loop Trail Hike in Calais
Let’s meet at 9:30 at the trail head at the top of Longmeadow Hill Rd, which is a left turn(going north) off County Rd just past the Wheeler Rd turn. If you get to the Bliss Pond Rd turn you’ve gone too far. From Maple Corners the right is just past the Bliss Rd turn. Robinson Ridge Trail Hike in Calais
Let’s meet at 9:30 at the intersection of Longmeadow Hill Rd and Robinson Hill Rd.  Longmeadow Hill Rd is a left turn(going north) off County Rd just past the Wheeler Rd turn. If you get to the Bliss Pond Rd turn you’ve gone too far. From Maple Corners the right is just past the Bliss Rd turn. Go up the Longmeadow Hill Rd until you see a road  intersection on the right. Another Robinson Ridge Trail Hike in Calais 
Let’s meet at 9:30 at the TRAILHEAD on Robinson Hill Rd that is ONE MILE from the  intersection of Longmeadow Hill Rd and Robinson Hill Rd.  How to get there: Longmeadow Hill Rd is a left turn(going north) off County Rd just past the Wheeler Rd turn. If you get to the Bliss Pond Rd turn you’ve gone too far. From Maple Corners the right is just past the Bliss Rd turn. Go up the Longmeadow Hill Rd until you see Robinson Hill Rd (NOT MARKED) on the right, just past a tan house with tiny pond and dock.  Drive on Robinson Hill Rd 1 mile to the clearly marked trailhead & Parking area on the right. Walk E Montpelier Trails off Sparrow Farm Road 

Let’s Meet at Miriam Hansen’s house at 9:30 for a hike through  some gorgeous woods. Her address is 460 Sparrow Farm Rd.

Coming south on County Rd take Horn of the Moon Rd, the next right after the Haggett Rd turn. Take a left on Jacobs Rd, and at the T turn left onto Sparrow Farm Rd. Miriam’s is on the left with a bicycle mailbox post.

From the south, take the Cummings Rd turn off County Rd. turn right onto North St, then left onto Sparrow Farm Rd. Miriam’s is on the right with a bicycle mailbox post.

Mallory Brook Trail Hike 
Let’s meet at 9:30. The trailhead is at end of Johnson Rd,  a  deadend turn off of Dodge Rd in E Montpelier. From E Montpelier Center (Old Meeting House)  it’s a right turn about 1/2 a mile before you get to the Putnam Rd, Vincent Flats Rd, Snow Hill Rd intersection at the 4 Corners School. From the 4 Corners School head towards EM Center and watch for Johnson Rd on your left. Directions are a bit hard to write, so here is a Google Maps link. https://goo.gl/maps/mz6f2SHBo2L2

Mallory Brook Trail Hike from Cherry Tree Hill Rd E Montpelier

Let’s meet at 9:30. If you are coming from the north to get to the Cherry Tree Rd Trailhead, go to the EM 4 Corners School near the junction of Snow Hill Rd, Putnam Rd, and Vincent Flats Rd. Take Vincent Flats Rd (turns to hard top) south, passing the EM Elementary School on your right. At a bend in the road keep straight onto Cherry Tree Hill Rd (dirt) passing an area of houses. The houses stop as you see farm fields on your right. Keep a close eye on the right for a small farm rd. Parking is on the right and you will see the Mallory Brook Trail sign.

From EM village go up the hill on Quaker Rd following the sign for EM Elementary. At the top of the hill take a left onto Cherry Tree Hill Rd and follow the directions above.

From Montpelier, take Town Hill Rd towards EM Village. At a bend in the road take a left onto Cherry Tree Hill Rd. Watch for a farm rd on the left that takes you to Mallery Brook Trailhead parking.


Hike from Kent Museum on Robinson Cemetery Rd, Calais 

Meet in front of the Kent Museum at 9:30 and we will walk the pretty Robinson Cemetery Rd  with it’s gorgeous views. Hike up Elmslie Rd in Calais

Walk – Calais Trails near Bliss Pond 

Let’s meet at the Old West Church at 9:30 Saturday October 27. We’ll walk the Calais Trails near Bliss Pond. The church address is 758 Old West Church Rd, Calais. From County Rd coming from the south take a right on Bliss Pond Rd and then a left onto Old West Church Rd. From Maple Corners  take Kent Hill Rd and then turn right onto Old West Church Rd. Walk – Loop along Curtis Pond,  Maple Corners – Sat Nov 16

Let’s meet at 9:30 at the swimming area parking lot 1/3 mile up Worcester Rd from the County Rd intersection in Maple Corners. This is past the little shingled house and dam on the right where there is skating in the winter. Not sure of parking, since the parking area might not be plowed, but we have options. We’ll walk a loop up Camp Rd to Upper Camp Rd along Curtis Pond and then back on West County Rd. Just FYI, the Community Center doesn’t allow random parking. It will be first day of hunting season so we’ll do road walks for the next month or so.
